EARTH DAY 2000 |

This year for Earth Day we had two major events. Keeping an eye on the future we have been working with various schools and college students to promote environmental awareness as children are the future. Hence The Orchid in association with Conservation Trust organised a PRINCIPAL'S SUMMIT. It's a first of its kind, a unique meeting of minds on the occasion of WORLD EARTH DAY. The summit was held at The Orchid and was well attended by over 40 principals of premier academic institutions of Mumbai to discuss "The approach of academic institutions towards environment education through outbound programmes". The principals shared a common platform to discuss their past and present efforts and future plans, towards sharing and implementing the Eco knowledge realistically and safely through outings, picnics, class visits and tours. The Chief Guest of the summit was Mr. S. P. Godrej, Chairman Emeritus WWF (World Wildlife Fund) who in his key address emphasized on action and deeds rather than words. Noted environmentalists Mr. Sunjoy Monga and Mr. Bittu Sahgal also graced the Summit. Mr. Vithal Kamat, Managing Director and Mr. Param Kannampilly, Director, represented The Orchid. The principal's discussed various ways to catch the attention of school children and increase their environmental awareness. The consensus was that the best way to do so would be through outbound activities like nature walks treks and other similar activities. Ms. Harinakshi Desai, Environment Officer of The Orchid also addressed the gathering and managed to elicit a pledge from the gathering where they all agreed to "Say No To Plastic Bags." And pass the message. |
