EARTH DAY 1999 |

The Orchid recently celebrated Earth Day on 22nd of April 1999 by having programmes in-house as well as for the community. We sponsored a slogan and poster making competition organised by Bandra Hindu Association (a non-government organisation) wherein 100 students from various schools had participated in the poster and slogan
making competition based on environment. The Orchid sponsored 18 prizes in 7 different categories. All the participants were given a free one year subscription to Sanctuary magazine and free copies of the CUB magazine for children were distributed. The in-house programme was celebrating Earth Day was held in a unique and different way - with our business partners namely our suppliers who form the backbone of our hotel. We thought a better way to celebrate Earth Day with our ever-supporting business partners. Hence all our suppliers were invited who have been with us right through the very beginning. We decided to have a Suppliers Meet wherein all the suppliers of The Orchid were brought together on a common platform and interacted not only with us but with one another as well. There were nearly 250 suppliers who gathered on the day of the meet, which was a half-day session, followed by lunch. As a momento all the suppliers were given gift hampers consisting of a cloth bag, eco-friendly pen, pencils, The Orchid calendar, opener and a discount coupon. The Suppliers Meet focused on news and views from people specializing in the field as they spoke on subjects ranging from quality, environment,standards, delivery schedules and of course suggestions from our partners. The Suppliers of The Orchid Hotel play a vital role in maintaining the environment friendly standards set up by us. Screened regularly for perfection to the core and for quality comparable if not better than the best in the industry, the suppliers are presented with a tough job. The speakers for the meet were: Mr. Alban Braganza - Purchase Manager, who spoke briefly (covering all topics) on quality control, delivery schedules, environment, packaging etc. Chef Sudhir Pai - Executive Sou Chef - addressed them on quality control. Ms. Harinakshi Desai - Environment Officer - spoke on the measures taken by The Orchid in being an ECOTEL and the ways in which packing could be reduced by the suppliers in delivering their products thereby reducing the amount of waste being generated by The Orchid. Mr. Vivek Pathiyan - General Manager - who summed up the session stating that as a team member he definitely seconds the cause of the environment which requires total commitment and support from the suppliers to make a better tomorrow. Mr. K.P. Kannampilly - Director - who addressed them in the end requesting the suppliers to give a plan of action as to what they plan on doing different which could benefit not only us but the environment at large and what would their commitment, as our business partners, be towards the environment.An interactive session is what we were aiming for which took the form of reality with business suppliers participating with great enthusiasm and addressing the audience. The Suppliers Meet was well received and we had comments like " it was a unique event arranged for the first time in the Hospitality Industry"; "our compliments and congratulations for arranging such a meaningful and goal oriented meet"; "a grand success by all parameters - programme, timings, speeches, interaction, attendance, hospitality etc". " The Meet made us, the suppliers, sorry partners, really proud to be associated with The Orchid; " the effect of this will be spread over a number of years to come","looking forward to have such a meet every year" are a few of the comments received from our Business partners. The Suppliers Meet was held in the spirit of comradeship, to let the suppliers know that The Orchid considers them a part of the organization. The Suppliers Meet was probably the first event of its kind in the hospitality industry and there couldn't be a better time to prove this point than on a day like Earth Day. |
