WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 1998 |

To celebrate World Environment Day we launched various campaigns. 1. The first being a one-week clean up drive campaign (from 1st to 6thJune 1998) which was undertaken by the team members led by our Managing Director, Mr. Vithal Kamat. The roads and by-lanes were given a face-lift by smartly turned out Team members in their white Orchid T-shirts. On the day itself we undertook 2. A "No Plastic Bags" Campaign at prominent shopping stores 3. A Pollution under control campaign too was launched wherein a free PUC check was done for cars cruising down the Western Express Highway. 4.In the air & on the ground, The Orchid is all around doing their bit for the Environment. RADIO STAR belted out The Orchid Environment message every morning where one top personality would give a message related to the environment. On World Environemnt Day we also launched a competition on Radio Star wherein Radio Star / The Orchid / Sahara India promoted the special programme for the world environment day 5.Similarly on World Environment Day we had organized a seminar at the hotel itself in the morning wherein we had invited speakers from various walks to address the crowd. This was done in association with a non-government organisation called Concern India Foundation. The topic of the seminar being "Better Environment – Varied Efforts, One Goal".Our speakers were: Mr. S. P. Godrej, Chairman of Godrej companies & also President of WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) who was the Chief Guest. Mr. D. T. Joseph earlier a high ranking government official and now the Managing Director of SICOM Ltd. Ms. Dinaz Noble an expert on Mangroves and Hospital waste. Mr. Debi Goenka an active environmentalist. Dr. Sheilu Sreenivasan President of Dignity Foundation, a non government organisation and Mr. Param Kannampilly Director of The Orchid. We felicitated Mr. Viren Merchant who is the pioneer of the Advanced Locality Programme. There were more than 100 people who attended this seminar, at the end of which we distributed cloth bags to every one with a message saying no to plastic bags. 6. The same day in the evening we also hosted an event for WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to enable them to celebrate the World Environment Day in their own way. 7. Next our environment message tapped the corridors of top fashion designers in the country. A grand exhibition cum sale of eco-friendly garments was held and the proceeds went to Concern India Foundation, a non-government organisation. 8.We also had various in-house programmes where free cloth bags were given to all the team members; from 1st to 5th June, 1998 turn down items (such as various herbs, magazine based on environment called "EcoIndia" and paper bags) were placed in all the guest rooms & paper bags were distributed to our guests visiting The Coffee Shop & The Bar. 9.The same year we also launched an architecture competition named "ECOVISION" which was thrown open to the public in general. The theme was to redesign Kamats Klub Goregaon - a sister concern of The Orchid & a popular club in Goregaon – suburbs of Bombay. We sponsored the contest, as a step to spreading eco-awareness & encouraging eco-friendly activities. Ecovision provided an opportunity to interior designers & architects to show their innate creative verve by fashioning environmentally friendly environs for the Kamats Club Goregaon. |
