World Environment Day 1998

A One-week Clean up Drive Campaign (from 1st to 6th June 1998) which was undertaken by our team members, led by our Managing Director, Mr. Vithal Kamat
- A "No Plastic Bag" Campaign at prominent shopping stores in Bombay.
- A Pollution Under Control campaign too was launched wherein a free PUC check was done for cars cruising down the Western Express Highway.
- The Orchid sponsored an Environment message every morning on a local radio station, wherein a top celebrity would give a message related to the environment, which went on 3 months.

A grand exhibition cum sale of eco-friendly garments was held and the proceeds went to Concern India Foundation.
- We also launched a competition on Radio Star wherein Radio Star/The Orchid/Sahara India promoted the special program for the world environment day
- We also organized a seminar at the hotel itself in the morning wherein we invited eminent speakers from various walks of life to address the gathering. The topic of the seminar being "Better Environment - Varied Efforts, One Goal". This was done in association with a non-government organisation called Concern India Foundation.
- On the same day in the evening we also hosted an event for WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to enable them to celebrate the World Environment Day in their inimitable way.
- We also had various in-house programs where free cloth bags were given to all the team members; from 1st to 5th June, 1998 turn down items (such as various herbs, magazine based on environment called "EcoIndia" and paper bags) were placed in all the guest rooms & paper bags were distributed to our guests visiting The Coffee Shop & The Bar.
The same year we also launched an architecture competition named "ECOVISION" which was thrown open to the public in general. The theme was to redesign Kamats Klub Goregaon - a sister concern of The Orchid & a popular club in Goregaon - suburbs of Bombay. We sponsored the contest, as a step to spreading eco-awareness & encouraging eco-friendly activities. Ecovision provided an opportunity to interior designers & architects to show their innate creative verve by fashioning environmentally friendly environs for the Kamats Klub Goregaon. The 1st prizewinner was given 1 lac rupees & free trip for 2 to USA. The 2nd prizewinner was given 50,000 rupees & free trip for 2 to London and The 3rd prizewinner was given 25,000 rupees & free trip to Germany for 2.
