Orchid Launches Green Week; Announces Plans To Clean Shivaji Park Beach And Rejuvenate Alm
The Orchid, Asia’s first Ecotel Hotel, will mark the World Environment Day by launching Green Week and committing itself to take not just symbolic measures but adopt real, cogent and pro-active environmental actions. In the environmental year falling between June 5, 2001 and June 5, 2002, The Orchid will clean the Shivaji Park Beach, rejuvenate the Advance Locality Management Programme, adopt more areas for beautification and initiate children to the environmental cause.
“World days like the World Environment Day, World Water Day or the World Earth Day have been marked to remind the common man of the importance of the cause and scarcity of these resources. And it is usually celebrated by conducting symbolic measures, but we thought that we should move beyond symbolisms and take hard measures,” said Harinakshi Desai, environment officer.
According to Ms. Desai, the Shivaji Park beach badly require cleaning. Soon, The Orchid will launch a programme to clean and maintain the beach with local participation. “What we have done is marked an environmental calendar and charted out programmes that need to be conducted within this calendar year.”
The Green Week, will be kicked off on June 5, with ‘Green Theme’. The Orchid, in association with Clean Air & Bombay Environmental Action Group will promote the ‘Sky Bus Metro Project’ by arranging a presentation by B Rajaram, Managing Director of Konkan Railways for the general public. The Sky Bus Metro will immensely increase city's public transport capacity at low cost and high efficiency, without increasing road traffic, air or noise pollution.
June 6 will be marked as ‘Green Initiative Day’ by promoting the message of environment both within the hotel premises and landscape. The lobby will be greened and appropriate messages will be displayed.
‘Green Watch Scheme’ will be introduced on June 7 to create awareness of greening among employees, guests and local community for its involvement in environmental efforts.
June 8 will be marked as the ‘Green Flag Day’ wherein staff of the Hotel will wear flags on their lapels with the slogan ‘I Love my Environment’. These flags will be distributed to all customers checking in during the fortnight.
The Green Week will be followed by attempting to rejuvenate the Advanced Locality Management (ALM) Programme. The Orchid is already a part of the ALM and has adopted roads and surrounding areas of the Hotel. “What we intend to do now is get all the active and in-active ALMs in the city and encourage them to participate more vigorously. The encouragement will be in the form of rich awards and felicitations. And most importantly, we will be guiding them through regular meetings and other infrastructure support,” explained Ms. Desai.
We also intend to create more beauty spots this year within the city. “Already The Orchid has beautified 1,07,296 sq feet of area in various parts of the city,” she said.
Another important programme The Orchid intends to undertake in this environmental year is to initiate children to the environmental cause in a big way. Already over one lac children have participated in one or the other environmental programmes initiated by The Orchid. “Sometimes we get children to our hotel and expose them to our environmental initiatives and brief them on how they can contribute. But the important thing is to get them involved.
Once they get involved, you can be sure of their whole-hearted commitment. Like last year when we initiated an anti-plastic drive through school children, over 50,000 students participated and collected a whopping 750 kgs of banned plastic bags. Many of these children, in the coming days, participated in many of our other programmes. What we saw is that once initiated, they involve themselves more. We will conduct many more programmes to initiate new children and continue on the spirit of the children already into the environmental cause.”
“Our efforts are oriented towards making every day an environmental day,” she concluded.
